Which exchange rate to use for your expenses and savings
Use the rate that really applies to each case: the one you paid for each exchange, the card rate for card purchases abroad, and a consistent market rate to value your savings. What matters is picking one and always using the same to compare.

Each rate, and what it is for
| Rate | Use it for |
|---|---|
| The one you paid | Each exchange you made: the only real one |
| Card rate | Purchases abroad by card, with its fees |
| A market rate | Valuing savings in another currency |
| Central bank rate | Official references |
The rule: don't rewrite history
A past expense shouldn't change value because the rate moved today. Each movement keeps its day's rate, and totals are converted separately, knowing which rate was used.
To split costs across currencies
If one person pays in one currency and the other in another, agree on one rate to settle debts and always use it. Nobody wins or loses by changing the rule when it suits them.
