Split expenses by income calculator
To split expenses by income, add up what everyone earns, work out what share of the total each one earns, and that's the share of the costs they cover. If one person earns 60% of what comes into the home, they pay 60% of the costs. This calculator gives each person's percentage and amount.

Why split by income
Half and half is simple, but when one earns much more than the other, household costs weigh twice as much on whoever earns less. Splitting by income means both put in the same share of what they earn: the effort is even even if the amounts are not.
An example with numbers
Anna earns $6,000 and Ben $4,000: $10,000 together. Anna earns 60% and Ben 40%.
If household costs are $3,000 a month, Anna pays $1,800 and Ben $1,200. Both keep 70% of their pay for themselves.
When incomes change
With raises, bonuses or uneven months, the percentage moves. In Busimy you enter each person's income (in any currency) and choose to split by income: each expense is divided with the current percentage and the app keeps track of who owes whom.
Frequently asked questions
- Gross or net income?
- Net, what really comes in each month. If someone has variable income, use an average of the last few months.
- What if one is paid in another currency?
- Convert both incomes to one currency at a rate you agree on to do the math. In Busimy each person enters their income in their own currency and you choose the rate they are compared at.
- Which costs go into the split?
- The household ones: rent, building fees, utilities, groceries. Personal spending (clothes, own outings) each pays alone.
